Rick Santorum

Senator, Pennsylvania - Republican

U.S. Sen. Richard John “Rick” Santorum (R-PA) is a known pro-life conservative, who is against abortion and homosexual acts. He is a son of an Italian immigrant father in Winchester, Virginia. Santorum attended Penn State University, and served as a campaign volunteer for the late Sen. John Heinz. He graduated with a degree in Political Science and received his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. He had worked as State Sen. Doyle Corman's administrative assistant, and later, earned his J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law.

At the age of 32, Sen. Santorum was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and made his mark in Congress as a champion of government accountability and welfare reform. He was a member of the renowned "Gang of Seven," a group of newly elected House members focused on cleaning up the abuse and corruption that was rampant at that time. He was elected to the U.S. Senate on Nov. 8, 1994, and was re-elected to each succeeding term. He has committed himself to eradicating the Global HIV/AIDS epidemic, strengthening and protecting Social Security, and providing every American with access to quality, affordable health care.

Currently, he is the Senate Republican Conference Chairman – the third-ranking member and youngest of the Republican Leadership. He is also the first Pennsylvanian to serve in such a top position.

In 1990, Sen. Santorum married Karen Garver, who was a writer and former neonatal nurse. The couple has six children, namely Elizabeth, Johnny, Daniel, Peter, Sarah Maria, and Patrick.
