Politicians, family and friends converge on Ag Progress Days

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA) were at Penn State's Ag Progress Days Lunch Wednesday, but their rivals, Senate challenger Bob Casey (D) and gubernatorial challenger Lynn Swann (R) were not able to attend because of conflicts in schedule. The two major statewide incumbents addressed 500 people, stressing the importance of effective energy policy to free the nation from foreign policy nightmares. Santorum, a member of the Senate's Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, said he is the first senator from Pennsylvania on that panel in 100 years, and said he has worked "diligently" on the last two farm bills to extend a milk program for farmers and to get Pennsylvania more farmland preservation money than any other state.

Santorum, during a news conference before lunch, didn't chide Casey for missing the event but instead focused on the two polls that showed him closing Casey's lead to within 6 points. Santorum called Casey "Bobby," accusing him of "avoiding the issues" and refusing to engage in debate. Casey was scheduled to tour Ag Progress Days Wednesday evening. By late afternoon, Casey was at a nearby Democratic picnic in Pine Grove Mills, where he responded to Santorum's statements with his own criticisms. Casey cited his father, Gov. Bob Casey, who said that true test of all public officials is what they do when they have power.

"I'm running against a man, Rick Santorum, who has a lot of power to improve people's lives, but I would argue he hasn't done that. We have a senator who wants to focus only on giving subsidies to big oil."

"There is no one in recent memory, or even long-term memory, that has done more for Pennsylvania agriculture in his time as a United States senator than I have."

"A fighter who's earned the position that I've run for."
Richard John Santorum
The Senator describing himself

"It's always the way it is with our races. We never start out ahead, and we're good closers. I like to look at the horses ahead of me before I come down the backstretch and start to make a move down the homestretch. "People are starting to focus in on the race, starting to see that there's a real difference between the two candidates: Someone who has a record of experience and hard work and determination, someone to fight for the interests of Pennsylvania, and someone who's running for his fourth statewide office in six years because his name is Casey."
