Fourteen supporters of Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) has given a total of $40,000 in a petition fund that allowed Green Party candidate for the Senate Carl Romanelli to collect over 100,000 signatures to make it to the November ballot. Romanelli has listed in-kind contributions of $66,000 from the Green Party with $34,000 from individuals who have given to Santorum's reelection campaign and $6,000 from individuals who lived at the same addresses as Santorum donors. Donations should not exceed $5,000 according to Ian Stirton, a Federal Election Commission spokesman but Romanelli insisted that if the party violated federal rules, it wasn't intentional.

For over two months, Santorum, who is trailing Democrat Bob Casey in the polls, has been giving close attention to Romanelli who could possibly siphon votes from Casey because of his pro-abortion rights, anti-Iraq war stance. Larry Smar, Casey spokesman, said Santorum is using Romanelli to draw out votes from Casey by adding another name in the ballot.
